It is apparent that the director Truffaut based much of this movie on his own childhood. Do you think Antione's relationship with his mother reflects Truffaut's relationship with his own mother or more of what he wished his relationship had been? Or maybe a combination of both?
I believe that this relationship is a mix of who his mother really was and who he wanted her to be. I believe he was searching for attention and affection from his mother and he shows this in the film when the on-screen mother showers love and attention, for example, when she takes Antoine to the movies and they simply have fun. I believe, Truffaut's real mother is exhibited when the on-screen mom expresses her desire to send Antoine away to school and she shows her frustration with her son.

I think Antoine's relationship with his mother is based on Truffaut's relationship with HIS mother. Antoine's mother abandons him a lot of the time. She also has a way of making him seem guilty of almost everything. She has no faith in him. I think there's an autobiographical sense to these two characters.
ReplyDeleteGreat question! Mimi
ReplyDeleteI believe that the relationship is a combination of both how his mother really was and how he wished she'd been. Antoine's mother has little faith in him in the film and doesn't take care of his basic needs (sheets for his bed), which demonstrates how Truffaut's relationship had been with his own mother. On the other hand, Antoine's mother also takes him to the movies and tries to talk to him about doing well in school, which could be based on how Truffaut wished his mother had acted.
